Mental Health and Women’s wellness Q&A

Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most researched, practiced, and respected forms of complementary medicine in the world.

Acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine looks at the body as a whole, focusing on the root causes of the disease. To restore harmony, acupuncture needles are inserted at specific points along pathways called channels or meridians. By stimulating these points, the body’s energy gets rebalanced, and the patient’s general condition of health is improved by strengthening the body’s ability to remain healthy and withstand disease or hardship.  Dr. He also suggests adjunct therapies to enhance treatment and speed healing. Proper eating habits, exercise, stretching, movement and herbal medicine practices, support and promote a balanced and healthy body, mind, and spirit.

Acupuncture and TCM have been shown to be safe and effective for many of the symptoms that often accompany pregnancy, including:

  • Anxiety and stress
  • Back pain and sciatica
  • Constipation
  • Fatigue
  • Heartburn hemorrhoids,
  • Morning sickness
  • Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

PMS can cause cramps, bloating, fatigue, breast pain, mood swings and changes in appetite during the onset of menstruation. Unfortunately, many women suffer from a wide variety of these symptoms every month to vary degrees. Acupuncture along with herbal medicine, dietary changes, and exercise, can help you regain hormonal balance before and during menstruation.

  • Dysmenorrhea

Acupuncture is a time-tested, safe, effective, natural, and drug-free way to reduce or eliminate pain, without side effects. Well-known and leading national and international health organizations acknowledge the benefits of acupuncture in treating and eliminating pain from a wide range of causes. Many studies have shown that acupuncture may significantly reduce menstrual pain often associated with fibroids and endometriosis.

Not only can acupuncture treat signs and symptoms of pain and discomfort, but it can also get to the root of the problem.

  • Anxiety, and Stress

According to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America, anxiety disorders are the most common mental health disorder in the United States. Anxiety disorders affect 40 million adults and have cost more than $42 billion a year, especially in the female population, whose incidence is approximately double that of the male population. In addition, these conditions are difficult to treat and have high relapse rates and medication side-effects. From the conclusions of many clinical studies, acupuncture is regarded as an effective way to relieve anxiety symptoms.

TCM does not view anxiety just as a brain dysfunction, but rather as an imbalance in a person’s organ system. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this imbalance is called Shan You Si (“anxiety & preoccupation”) and is believed to affect the main organs system: the heart, lung, spleen, liver and kidneys.

Dr. He will use her knowledge of TCM and modern Psychology to investigate the underlying causes of anxiety, this is done by carrying out a thorough diagnostic evaluation to determine which organ systems are out of balance, She  will seek to restore the imbalance by carefully inserting fine, sterile needles into the acupuncture meridian points correlating to those organs. Additionally, acupuncture helps to reduce stress, encourages, and supports a greater sense of well-being and balance.

Acupuncture meridian points activate the body’s innate healing abilities acupuncturists call Qi (chee). According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Qi is the vital energy that animates the body and protects it from illness. Qi flows through pathways called meridians and provides nourishment to the body’s cells, tissues, muscles, organs, and glands.

When there is an imbalance or blockage in the flow of Qi, symptoms associated with the condition or illness may appear. Acupuncture is just one aspect of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), there are many modalities within TCM that may effectively contribute to restoring the body’s natural healing ability.

From a modern scientific perspective, stimulation of acupuncture meridian points causes the release of a multitude of nervous system chemicals in our brain, spinal cord, and muscles that help restore the body’s ability to heal naturally.
